The European Union Award for Contemporary Music, or European Border Breakers Awards came into being with the aim to provide support to European artists in music in the process of positioning on foreign markets. It is awarded every year to emerging artists and groups who are willing to travel and promote their work outside of their respective countries. Apart from this one, the prize for the Audience Choice is also awarded where the audience can vote for their favourite performers, but also win an award to attend the award ceremony.
Ten winners are chosen based on the data received from the research centre Nielsen Music Control research, the European Broadcasting Union, radio stations and festivals participating in the European Talent Exchange Programme.
